Tourism in the Baix Empordà moves towards sustainability
The Baix Empordà Tourism Observatory has published the 2024 results on the adaptation of the European system of ETIS indicators for sustainable destination management. The study, based on surveys of companies in the sector, analyzes the economic, environmental and social impact of tourism activity in the county.
Among the most outstanding data, more than 64% of the companies operated all year round, despite the fact that 60% of the hires were temporary. Only 27.5% of the products offered -food, beverages or services- were local. It is also noteworthy that more than a third of the companies have environmental or quality certifications, and many show a predisposition to improve accessibility.
ETIS, promoted by the European Commission, offers a common methodology for measuring tourism sustainability. It is a voluntary tool based on self-assessment and internal analysis, which makes it possible to monitor progress over time.
The Observatory is an initiative of the Baix Empordà County Council to generate knowledge and provide useful data to both professionals in the sector and the public.
